L’Altro Impero Pizzeria and Trattoria overlooks the beautiful Piazza Dei Signori, which has been dubbed by the Veronese as “Piazza Dante” because of its statue of the famous poet Dante Alighieri. It is considered to be the ‘living room’ of Verona, and is surrounded by imposing buildings that played a part in the life of the Scaliger family.
You can admire the Town Hall or the Ragione building (which was the seat of the first citizens council) and the Cortile del Mercato Vecchio with La Scala del Ragione (the steps of reason). Following on from these are the Palazzo del Capitano (the captain’s palace) and the Palazzo del Governo (government house), which today is the seat of the provincial administration and the prefecture.
The Scaliger funerary monuments stand just a short walk from the square: imposing tombs of the Lords of Verona, the Scaliger family.
